Fasting by the clock. 16 hours. 18 hours. The longer, the better.

For a long time, intermittent fasting has primarily been defined by numbers and fixed fasting windows. But what happens when your body needs something completely different on certain days?

This is where Flex Fasting comes in – a new approach to fasting that Dr Mindy Pelz is currently bringing into focus.

What is Flex Fasting?

Flex Fasting means not rigidly following the same fasting window every day. Instead, you learn to pay closer attention to factors such as stress, sleep, hormonal changes and your body's signals.

After all, fasting is a hormetic stressor. And more stress isn't automatically better.

Especially during perimenopause and menopause, it can be helpful to take a closer look: How much stress is my body currently under? Did I sleep well? Do I feel energised – or already exhausted?

Flex Fasting raises an interesting question:

What if your body, rather than the clock, decided how long you fast today?

Moving Away from Rigid Rules

For me, this approach fits perfectly with a holistic view of health.

It's not about giving up fasting. It's about using fasting more consciously and strategically.

On some days, a longer fasting window may feel right. On others, a shorter one may be more appropriate.

Flexibility doesn't mean a lack of discipline. It means learning to understand your body's signals.

And perhaps this is the next evolution of fasting.
